Cleaning versus a basic pump-out

On a straightforward tank that is pumped on schedule, the difference is modest. On a tank that has gone many years, served a large household, or taken a lot of kitchen grease, the difference is significant. Thick scum layers and hardened sludge at the bottom need to be broken up and removed rather than simply drawn off the top, and the baffles need to be checked individually because that is where the blockages sit.

The baffles are the part that fails quietly

Inlet and outlet baffles exist to stop floating scum from leaving the tank and stop the incoming flow from disturbing the settled sludge. When a baffle deteriorates, falls off or gets matted with grease, solids escape into the drain field at every flush. That damage accumulates silently. Checking baffles during a cleaning is how you catch it before it becomes a drain field problem.

Frequently asked questions

Is cleaning different from pumping?

Yes. Pumping removes the contents. Cleaning also breaks up compacted sludge, clears the baffles, and removes the grease film from the walls and outlet. If your tank is pumped on schedule the difference is small; if it has been neglected, cleaning is what actually resets the system.

Can you clean a tank through a small lid?

Usually yes, since the vacuum hose fits through a standard lid opening. What limits us is not the lid size but total access: a tank with no riser and several feet of soil over it takes longer, and that is a labour cost rather than a barrier.

Do I need to empty the house first?

No. Just avoid running heavy water while we work, such as laundry, dishwashing or long showers. Everything else can stay exactly as it is.

How will I know the cleaning worked?

The tank comes back to a clear baseline: slow drains that were caused by tank level improve, odour clears, and you get a written note of the baffle and outlet condition. If a symptom persists afterwards, it is coming from somewhere other than the tank, and that narrows the next step.
